Sunday 12 June: Day 3 of the 2011 Russia trip

Suzdal in evening light is a magical place. I was here once before, in 2002, in what was then judged to be the hottest summer in Russia for 123 years. I remember emerging early in the morning from the little wooden house in the grounds of the Pokrov Convent where we were staying to find the town swathed in mist. It was in fact a smog caused by spontaneously burning peat and forest fires in the surrounding countryside. But this year Suzdal was tranquil and exquisite as we walked late into the evening around this unspoilt corner of Old Russia, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
