The Jewels of ‘War & Peace’

Russia Beyond the Headlines has posted an item about the jewellery created by the Russian jeweller Pyotr Axenoff for the BBC’s 6-part adaptation of Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’, which is currently being broadcast here in the UK.

Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn in the American film of ‘War and Peace’, directed by King Vidor. 1956. See my blogpost about ‘Natasha’s Ballgown’. Pyotr Axenoff says he admires the tiara worn by Hepburn in the film.

Vyacheslav Tikhonov and Liudmila Saveleva as Andrei and Natasha in Sergei Bondarchuk’s epic film version of ‘War and Peace’ (1968). In the Ball scene Natasha doesn’t wear jewels but only flowers in her hair, accentuating rather appropriately, I think, her youth and freshness at that point in the story. (Incidentally, you can watch the whole film – lasting nearly seven hours – at Pushkin House in London on 6 February.)
